Bus trip to Chosen Food exhibit in Baltimore

The York Jewish Community Center is offering a bus trip to the Jewish Museum of Maryland in Baltimore in March.

The trip, led by Rabbi Joan Lenowitz of the Ohev Sholom Congregation, is open to members of all faiths with an interest in Jewish cuisine. Participants will explore the exhibit Chosen Food: Cuisine, Culture and American Jewish Identity at the museum.

The bus will leave at 10 a.m. and return at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at the York JCC, 2000 Hollywood Drive, York Township.

The cost is $35 per person, which includes the bus trip and a docent-led tour of the exhibit. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the rest of the museum and get lunch at nearby kosher-style delis on their own.

Antiques show at the expo center

The Original 158th Semi-Annual York Antiques Show and Sale features 96 exhibitors with furniture, jewelry, rugs, toys, porcelain and more.

The show lasts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, and Saturday, Feb. 4, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, in Memorial Hall East at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., West Manchester Township.

Admission is $10.

Display by sculptors Hager, Vickery at York College

Works by sculptors Jenny K. Hager and D. Lance Vickery will be highlighted in two shows at the York College Galleries in January and February.

The artists will give a lecture to open the shows at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, in the DeMeester Recital Hall in Evelyn and Earle Wolf Hall on the York College campus, 441 Country Club Road, Spring Garden Township. A reception will follow from 6 to 8 p.m.  in the lobby.

The exhibits will remain open from Jan. 24 through Wednesday, Feb. 22. “Flight Lab,” by Hager, will be shown in the Brossman Gallery. “Intimate Duet,” by Hager and Vickery, will be shown in the Cora Miller Gallery. Both galleries are in Wolf Hall.

All events are free and open to the public.

The galleries are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Wonders of the Universe show at Nixon Park

Nixon Park will play host to the universe itself during a free program from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22.

The Wonders of the Universe program will feature recent photos of newly discovered celestial objects including planets, comets, asteroids, galaxies, nebulae and star clusters. Parks program coordinator Jeri Jones will lead the free PowerPoint program in the Nature Center at Nixon Park, 5922 Nixon Drive, Springfield Township.

Art, nature classes for children at Nixon Park

The York County Department of Parks and Recreation will host art classes for tweens and nature classes for preschoolers this winter at Nixon County Park, 5922 Nixon Drive, Springfield Township.

Artist Teanna Byerts will offer Wildlife Art Class I from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, and Wildlife Art Class II from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the park’s Nature Center. The program is recommended for ages 9 to 12 and will emphasize basic shapes, detailing and sketching. The class includes basic supplies and reference materials.

The fee is $10 per class; registration is required.

Naturalist Amber Carothers will offer Small Wonders, a five-part class highlighting nature through indoor and outdoor activities, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. every Wednesday in February (Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29). The program is recommended for ages 3 and 4.

The fee is $35 for the series; registration and a completed health form are required.

Model plane building days at Heritage Trust

The York County Heritage Trust will host two P-51 Model Build-it-Day events as part of the ongoing exhibit Front Porch to Front Lines: York County Goes to War.

The free sessions will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Historical Society Museum, 250 E. Market St., York, and the same time Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Agricultural and Industrial Museum, 217 W. Princess St., York. In the event of snow, the classes will be held the following Saturdays (Jan. 28 and Feb. 25) at their respective sites.

The workshop is open to ages 10 to 14, with parents needing to stay with the model-building participant for children under 12. Attendees will make a 1:72 scale model from a kit with step-by-step guidance from Chet Mohn, president of the Central Pennsylvania chapter of the International Plastic Modelers Society. Mohn also will discuss the history of the P-51, the plane’s use during World War II and model-building as a hobby.
