KYLE DUNLAP, For York Weekend

Intriguing museum-quality antiques will greet visitors at the 42nd Greater York Antiques Spring Show and Sale this weekend at the York Expo Center.

“I’ve been involved with the show for many years, but I learn something new about antiques and see new and exciting items every year,” says volunteer David Boyer. “The show is a great opportunity for people to see, buy and be educated about antiques.”

The education is a large part of the appeal for other longtime volunteers and a big selling point for newcomers.

All kinds of Americana will be on sale at the Greater York Antiques Spring Show and Sale at the York Expo Center.

“Dealers are always willing to discuss their items,” says volunteer Lance Minnich. “This only adds to the great experience and is great for first-time buyers.”

Collectors chasing less well-known interests and pieces, ones that aren’t necessarily part of York’s colonial past, might be surprised to find their passions at the show.

“My interest is in Navajo and Native American art and items, which many people aren’t familiar with,” Minnich says, “but I’ve learned a lot from dealers over the years. Everyone is very willing to educate their buyers on where an item is from, what it is and what time period it came from.”

Fundraiser: The show is presented by Burk Antique Shows and is dedicated to raising funds for the YMCA of York and York County Y’s Men’s Club youth service programs at Camp Spirit. Funds have recently paid for a new, winterized lodge so activities can run all year long.

“The show was started in 1970 by Judge John Rauhauser,” Minnich says. “The judge wanted to raise funds for this excellent cause and bring a quality antique show to the York Area. The majority of the funds raised at the show go to upkeep at Camp Spirit.”

Hundreds of children use the camp each year — thousands over the 42 years the show has been going.

“The camp is a 14-acre facility that is used year-round,” Minnich says. “We had over 900 kids go through the camp just last year alone.”

What you’ll see: The show itself will consist of more than 70 vendors from 17 states. Items date from the late 1700s to the early 1950s and include a variety of furniture, commercial signs, household goods and much more.

“I’ve been involved with this from the beginning, my husband started the show, and I always find something new, amazing and interesting,” says Donna Burk of Burk Antique Shows.

“I remember one item from about 30 years ago. It was a life-size bull used as a display for some type of farm equipment,” she says. “We all laughed at it, but the guy sold it.”

The show has given Burk the opportunity to meet many interesting people over the years, she says. She considers most of them to be family.

This 1930s Tramp Art style wood church model is representative of the pieces attendees will find at the Greater York Antiques Spring Show and Sale. (credit: GYAS)

“I was just talking to one dealer today who thanked me for my help, and I told him, ‘hey, I have to take care of my kids!’”

Favorites: Minnich recalls one item he bought that holds a special place in his heart.

“It must be 4-foot high and is made of a large teapot with smaller ones stacked on top,” he says. “I also bought a beautiful carousel candle from an old merry-go-round. Last year, a set of antique glass candle Christmas lights caught my eye. They’re just amazing items, truly amazing.”

“Most items pre-date my childhood,” Boyer says. “They’re early Americana. Almost everything I come across is high quality, even museum quality.”

Many small items will be available for those not looking to spend a fortune in a tough economy. Minnich says pricing may have changed with the times, but the quality of the items remains.

“The show is just an all-around great event to visit,” he says. “The dealers are a fountain of knowledge and the items are unusual but intriguing. Most of them you will never see anywhere else.”

Going to the show

The 42nd Greater York Antiques Spring Show and Sale is open to the public starting at 10 a.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Hall East at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., West Manchester Township. Events last until 6 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Michael Williams Band will open for Jonny Lang in a blues-rock concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 18, at the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center, 1031 Edgecomb Ave. on the Penn State York campus in Spring Garden Township. Look for Williams and Lang to jam together later in the show. Tickets are $39.
York Weekend entertainment editor Mel Barber interviewed Williams by phone about the legacy of the blues, his love for old-school rock and his upcoming show in York. Read the feature story and check out Williams’ music below:

—

By the time he was 8 years old, Michael Williams was rocking a mean blues guitar on stage alongside his father, Larry “Junior Medlow” Williams, and legendary guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan.

“They start ’em early down there in Texas,” he says, chatting by phone between tour stops in Indiana and Ohio.

The family tradition could reach another generation soon, with Williams’ son, who turns 4 this month.

“I’m not gonna force it on him, but there’s no stopping him; he’s already rocking,” Williams says.

It’s no surprise, given the family history and the shared birthday between Williams’ son and the title track off the band’s latest album, Fire Red.

“I put it together the night my son was born, and it’s been my cornerstone ever since,” he says.

Direction: But Williams has never believed in riding on family coattails; when his father died in 1997, he knew it was time for a change.

“With the passing of my father, I just wanted to see if I could do it on my own, without any history or legacy behind me, on my own merits,” he says. “And now today I have, and it feels really good.”

He left Texas behind and moved up to Seattle in search of a different sort of inspiration for his blues-rock fusion.

“I knew that I wanted to find Jimi Hendrix and that whole vibe and walk the same path and absorb some of that energy,” Williams says. “He was always one of my idols.”

In 1999, Williams formed a band to breathe new life into the music styles he loved.

“I never wanted to be pigeonholed as a blues artist,” he says. “I wanted to pay homage to the blues, of course, but I wanted to make sure I set my sights on bridging the two sounds together.”

Passion: And although he writes and sings, those aren’t the passions that drive his fierce intensity on stage.

“It’s the guitar,” he says. “It’s like a sport for me.”

Much like the best athletes, Williams throws himself wholeheartedly into his performance.

“I couldn’t do it any other way … because I have so much passion for what I’m doing,” he says. “That passion and intensity is gonna stay until this heart stops beating.”

Even in his downtime, Williams prefers to relax by kicking back with his favorite instrument.

“I play with the guitar through headphones pretty much on the road all the time,” he says.

Originality: Playing around and tweaking his sound is part of Williams’ passion for independence and originality, something he has honed in his tracks on Fire Red with Eddie Kramer, the legendary producer famous for his work with Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and countless others.

“I’ve always loved Jimi, but I never wanted to be considered a Jimi Hendrix clone, and on Fire Red, when I met Eddie Kramer, he helped me come out of my shell and develop my own sound,” Williams says. “It wasn’t until Eddie Kramer that I really felt confident as an A-list guitar player.”

That confidence still takes a backseat in the moments before a show, when Williams prefers to spend a moment reflecting on meaning, purpose and his responsibility to the audience.

“I pray to the universe and make sure that I can do my best because it’s not about me, really,” he says. “It’s about where you’re at in your mind and where you’re at in your heart and soul — and if you’re in a bad place, that would convey to the audience, so I try my best to stay humble and focused.”

When he hits the stage, though, it’s time to engage with the audience and let his intensity out to play.

“I’m kinda an eclectic kind of guy, and so people see me and they’re kinda like ‘oh, what are we gonna get here,’” Williams says. But he wins them over once the music starts flowing.

“I melt ’em like putty.”

The benefits of taking the whole family out to an alpaca show are no secret, according to Scott Johnston, coordinator for the 2012 Pennsylvania Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association Breeders Showcase.

“Seeing the alpacas, seeing what is made from their fiber, show ring judging and much, much more make the PAOBA Breeders Showcase a great event for all ages,” he says.

The family-friendly show will be open to the public Saturday and Sunday in the Toyota Arena at the York Expo Center. This year’s show will incorporate special events including the alpaca-to-shawl competition and a Pennsylvania alpaca princess competition.

Spectators of all ages at the Breeders Showcase will be able to meet and greet alpacas. (credit: PAOBA)

“The event will showcase not only the alpacas themselves but also what can be made from their fur,” Johnston says. “The kids can enjoy crafts such as finger puppets, felted items, flowers and stuffed animals while their parents can browse the selection of alpaca fiber socks, sweaters” and other items.

Watch and learn: “We just have a great time and get to know new people and be reacquainted with old friends and fellow breeders,” says Beth Lutz, coordinator of the alpaca-to-shawl demonstration and auction. She describes the demonstration as being similar to the sheep-to-shawl competition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show — but even better.

“Show-goers get an up-close and personal view of the shawl competition at the PAOBA event,” Lutz says. “Event-goers at the farm show can only watch from the stands, but our contest allows people to stand right beside the action.”

The alpaca-to-shawl contest will involve three teams of four to five members making a complete shawl from alpaca fiber in roughly three to three and a half hours. The shawls are then auctioned off with most of the proceeds going toward the association’s scholarship program.

“People just stop and watch and absolutely love it and love being a part of it,” Lutz says.

In style: The show also will feature a unique event for humans, the Pennsylvania alpaca princess competition. The girls and young women involved are working toward winning college scholarships. The public will be able to vote for their favorite alpaca princess, with the competition beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Breeders Showcase will feature between 400 and 500 alpacas from more than 175 farms. The association hopes to educate the public about the benefits of alpacas and alpaca fiber.

“Right now, alpaca fur is featured in high fashion in cities like Paris, Milan and Tokyo,” says Darwin Kell, organizer of the fashion show and alpaca princess competition. “It is our hopes to make the fur more available to the public.”

The group’s goals made a fashion show a natural fit for the showcase.

“This is the reasoning behind the fashion show,” Kell says. “We will feature the contestants from the alpaca princess competition in the show.”

Debby Wise, owner of Fashion and Design Co. International, is spearheading the fashion show.

Owners describe alpaca behavior as similar to cats -- friendly, but independent. (credit: PAOBA)

“Wise has traveled all over the country,” Kell says, “so we are lucky to have such a celebrity helping us out.”

Alpaca attitude: Association members describe the alpacas themselves as much like cats.

“Alpacas are more like cats than dogs,” Johnston says. “Each has a unique personality. I have some that will let me touch them and some who are always very timid, but people will have ample opportunity to touch many alpacas at the show.”

Lutz agreed, saying, “They all have different personalities, but overall, I find them easy, friendly, and not very difficult to take care of. I can take care of 20 alpacas in the amount of time it takes me to take care of my two horses.”

Kell described his alpacas as “very inquisitive, gentle, and laid back.”

He points out one common fear that is generally unfounded.

“Most people are afraid of alpacas because they think they’ll spit on them,” he says. “I’ve been in this business for over 11 years and have only been spit on four times, so I can assure people they don’t have much to worry about.”

As for the showcase itself, Kell says he hopes to see visitors taking advantage of the chance to pick up last-minute Mother’s Day gifts.

“This is just an overall great event,” Kell says. “We hope to have a great turnout in order to inform more people about the benefits of alpacas. It’s also a great way to treat your mother to a more memorable Mother’s Day gift then just flowers and a card.”

“Alpacas are truly wonderful animals,” Kell adds. “I take them to schools and nursing homes and everyone loves them. Hopefully we can convince more people to invest their resources into these creatures.”

Going to the show

The 2012 Pennsylvania Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association Breeders Showcase is open to the public starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday in the Toyota Arena at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., West Manchester Township. Events last all day.

Admission and parking are free.

For more information and a complete schedule of events, visit the organization’s website at www.paoba.org.
